Weston Park '99
written by Dr Diff-Lock
Glorious weather, fabulous setting, lots of people and lots of vehicles ... the ingredients for an enjoyable experience, what's more it was centred around 4x4s and driving off-road. It was everything the organisers proclaimed it would be, and there was no "hard sell" of an off-road magazine or particular make of vehicle.
It was great to meet and chat with people who owned all different kinds of 4x4s and who enjoyed off-roading at different levels, almost refreshing compared with the somewhat nullifying single-marqued-ness of another annual off-road show. No this was Weston Park '99 set in the hospitable Midlands on the A5 between Cannock and Telford on the splendid Weston Park Estate.
This "photo-article" will hopefully give you a taste of what you missed, and if you were at Weston Park '99 and your vehicle can be seen in any photograph on this page e-mail us for your prize, but you must tell us your story about tou and your 4x4 !
It was refreshing to see such a great club turn-out, not just the off-roaders but also the "show-n-shine" people too. Noticed the UMM Club (yes that rather pug-ugly machine), the Japanese 4x4 Club of Great Britain (there're everywere at the moment!) and endless regional clubs. What a great attendance from the Customer Hilux Club, loads of machines all aiming at being the highest ! What was clear is that everyone there with a 4x4 got stuck in and enjoyed the off-roading that was offered on the Public Off Road Route and the spectacular "Mud-Run", which one thought should have been termed a "Mud-Wade".
On the spending-your-money front plenty of opportunity for the wife to buy you early Christmas presents; there were winches, ropes, strops, shackles, wheels, tyres, jacks and endless stalls of clothing and loads of military vehicle bits and pieces. Everything was relevant to the off-roader.
The organisers kept us entertained in the central arena with some splendid displays of Jeeps, Hiluxes and military vehicles all accompanied by pulse-racing music appropriate to the antics of those hurtling around the hay-bales !
Well done Tom McGuigan let's have another one for next year and we'll all come along and enjoy it again, oh, don't forget to order the sunshine again.
