Readers Rides - August 1999

Bob Tailed Rangie

We see many of these for sale as "abandoned project" and/or as a finished vehicle that should have been abandoned !Very few of these conversions are done to any great engineering standard with the consequence of an untidy and potentially unsafe 4x4. However this one is not such a machine and is pictured here having just extricated one of his colleagues from a mud hole.

SWB Landie "special"

The picture on the right shows what many might consider a "shed". However, looks are deceptive and after closer examination it's apparent that this is a vehicle that has been carefully thought out. Bucket seats and four point harnasses, external roll cage, 7.50-16 sats on LWB LR rims, fuel tank mounted above the floor, modified and silenced exhaust, battery cut out switch in the cab and outside the vehicle, robust "captive" front and rear towing eyes, etc., Engine and box are stadard petrol 2.25 series II. The battle scars are as a result of eight years off-roading !

Fourtrak

Just about to enter a deep mud-hole we can see the undercarriage of this Daihatsu at a sand quarry near Leeds. A capable diesel motor gives plenty of low down torque and with the 7.50-16 SATS traction is good also.Modifications also include two towing eyes at the front and a high mounted rear tow hitch with the number plate being mounted up higher too to prevent it being lost on off-road outings.

LandRover SWB V8

Great to see an off-roader equipped with roll frame and rear bucket seats with full harnass fitted, great ... if you take the kids give them some protection. Do not off-road without seat belts or harnasses, inversion of the vehicle can occur quickl yand without warning, be prepared for the worst !This series III has a 90 front end and increased capacity radiator to assist the cooling of the V8 motor, plenty of traction here from 7.50-16 sats.
